If you are itching to get out on Mille Lacs Lake ice fishing, due to wind patterns, the southern area of the lake is going to be an angler's best bet. Isle and Cove Bays have the best reported average ice thickness across the lake and currently have anglers actively out fishing on them.
- West Side of Mille Lacs: Some bays have ice cover but the majority of the Mille Lacs's west side is not an option currently to safely walk out. Ice cover can be found 100 to 200 feet out from shore but is so unpredictable, no average ice thickness can be given.
- South Side of Mille Lacs: Ice thickness can be found in the 4" to 6" range within Isle Bay and reports of up to 5" of ice can be found in Cove bay on the south-west corner of Mille Lacs. Portable can be seen out within the bays on a daily basis with no reports of anyone going through the ice yet.
- There was a report of anglers tip-up fishing out front of Izatys Resort but no ice thickness was feedback.
- North Side of Mille Lacs: No good at all, but things will be changing very soon. The North to North Western winds have not been kind to the northern area of Mille Lacs lake. Where ice was once 3/4" thick, the winds have churned it into a soupy shard-fest of extremely jagged and thin ice. This extends out for a couple of hundred yards before open water is found.
- East Side of Mille Lacs: Ice thickness can be found from 1" to 6" roughly a couple of hundred yards out from shore depending on upon where you are at. Some areas in the bays close to shore show where anglers have been walking out.
