Finding Luring Catching Mille Lacs Walleyes
Overall Mille Lacs Walleye Fishing Report
The time of day and depth are the top two critical focuses for finding and catching walleyes on Mille Lacs right now.
Good numbers and sized walleyes are being reported in almost every structure, bottom, and lake location. There have been reports of 20 to 30 fish being caught during day-long outings on gravel, mud, sand, and even rocky bottoms, with one report of over 50 walleyes caught. With the current Mille Lacs walleye bite, any Mille lacs ice anglers have a good chance at a multiple walleye trip anywhere they choose.
Overall Top Mille Lacs Walleye Fishing Tips
Out of all the data mined in the past few days, your overall best chances at catching walleyes on Mille Lacs right now include:
- Mud flat
- 20′ to 30′ depth range
- Between 3 pm and 7 pm
- A brightly colored Jigging spoon
- Half a fathead minnow
- Continuous aggressive jigging
- Aggrevliy setting the hook
Overall Best Mille Lacs Walleyes Targeting Tactics
Depths for Targeting Mille Lacs Walleyes
On average, across the lake, walleyes have been found and actively feeding within the 12′ to 20′ depths range. Anglers who traveled out to deeper waters have reported as much action as anglers who have stayed under the 20′ mark.
Anglers who fished shallow (5′ to 10′ fow) reported the least walleye and overall activity. However, Mille Lacs reports showed the 10′ or less depth range was best for catching walleyes overnight (1 am to 4 am) as anglers who fished overnight in 10′ to 30′ depth ranges reported a tough overnight walleye bite.
Current Lakewide Walleye Bite Situation
The walleye bite right now on Mille Lacs is drastically different and depends upon where you are fishing.
On the north end to the northwest basin of Mille Lacs, the walleyes seem to be in a transition pattern and traveling long distances throughout the day hours. They are biting extremely lite and take fineness and a subtle hookset to get them up the ice hole. There is nothing subtle about their approach, though. A single walleye will fly up to the bait almost instantly and then stop and stare. Anglers have to work subtly finesse them into inhaling the presentation. If they don’t buy into it, the walleye do not linger, and they are gone quicker than they came.
The walleyes seem to be larger schools on the Southend to the southeast corner of Mille Lacs, even with the bigger fish. They are coming in fast and in groups. They are biting aggressively, at times slamming even a dead minnow and running away with it, almost setting the hook themselves. This behavior still warrants mobility, but stationary fishing, such as in a Mille Lacs rental fish house or portable, is a little more forgiving. Less long-distance movement is required to see the next group of roaming, feeding walleyes.
On the north to the northwest part of Mille Lacs, walleyes seem not to be as localized in one specific area, and remaining mobile is a must. The walleyes seem to be schooling up more and following transition areas in packs on the south end to the southeast corner, almost circling back to target the same areas again and again.
The Northeast and eastside sides seem to be more of a mixed bag. Depth and structure seem to play more of a role in how the walleyes should be targeted and the best rule to follow would be, if they are not there, or they are there and nothing is working, then it’s time to move.
Renting an ice fishing house on Mille Lacs does not guarantee walleyes, but renting an ice fishing house on Mille Lacs guarantees you have a warm and very close place to use as your tactical walleye hunting headquarters. If you are unfamiliar with how to go about being mobile on Mille Lacs hunting for walleyes, you certainly should consider hiring a Mille Lacs Lake Fishing guide service and they will teach you along with putting you on the latest Mille Lacs walleye bite.
If you want to maximize your chances at catching walleyes and turning a trip into an experience to remember, there is no shame in hiring a Mille Lacs Lake fishing guide to help bend the learning curve of a huge lake your way. Once you hire a Mille Lacs fishing guide, not only do you drastically increase the odds and chances of landing more and bigger walleyes, you will also gain that new friend who is on the inside. If you have a great time and the fishing trip is making you feel like you are in a dream, always remember to tip your fishing guide and tip them well. Good things will come of it of you. Also, it’s recommended to tip the resort staff if they go above and beyond. Once you tip someone well, they will remember you and around Mille Lacs, that’s money in the bank down the road. A good rule of thumb on if or if not to tip a guide or resort staff is, if you feel guilty for not tipping them, then a tip is warranted. If someone is not treating you right, there should be no shame in the tip game.

Region Specific Mille Lacs Walleye Fishing Reports
Eastside bays fishing 10′ to 20′ of water areas have been good for walleyes late in the day (3 pm to after dark). On the eastside main lake areas in the 20′ to 30,’ the walleye bite is significantly better. Although the late afternoon into evening saw the most and biggest walleyes being caught, walleye were being caught late morning, mid-day, afternoon, evening.
On the south end of Mille Lacs, focusing on rocky transition areas in the 15′ to 20′ depth range has seen the most walleyes being caught. The almost only time walleyes seem aggressively feeding is during the early morning hours (4 am to 7 am) and late afternoon into mid-evening (3 pm to 8 pm at the latest. If walleyes come around late at night or during the very early morning hours it’s been between midnight and 4 am.
Hottest Jigs and Lures for Mille Lacs Walleyes
The past week has seen a few new types of lures having success with Mille Lacs walls. By far, the Mille Lacs special jigging spoon still resides in the top spot, right next to the solitary glow hook, but a couple of new styles and new brands are starting to stand out. They worth picking up and testing out during your next trip to Mille Lacs and can be found below in the hot lures section.
The best setup right now on Mille Lacs for walleyes is none other than the KING of all Mille Lacs ice fishing setups, the jigging rod, and the deadstick combo. Even during the day hours, wheelhouse anglers are choosing to reel up the rattle reels and deadstick with no bobber. On the tip-up front, not many reports of anglers using tip-ups right now unless they are targeting northern pike. This also has to do with the weather being warmer as tip-up use on Mille Lacs actually increases as the temperature drops.
Lindy Glow Streak – Taco Salad
The Lindy Glow Streak showed on the walleye scene almost two years ago. It did not take off like previous Lindy lures and has been more of a progression. Yes, it takes glow sticks, Yes, its action is not what most Mille Lacs ice anglers are used to. Yes, it has one less hook compared to other options.
What makes the Lindy Glow Streak a hot lure for Mille Lace ice is its rattle, the movements, and the glue stick really makes the lure, and its colors stand out is its glow from its glow stick feature is very bright. Most importantly, it’s catching Mille Lacks walleyes. Certainly worth a spot in any ice anglers lure box. The best color for Mille Lacs is the Taco Salad.
Rapala Jigging Rap 05
Rapala makes the official Jigging Rap 05 used in the video above where Brad Hawthorne and Pat were slaughtering the hot Mille Lacs walleye bite. The “Rap” is short for Rapala. Swimming tantalizing in a circle or suspended, and the Jigging Rap features a balanced, weighted minnow profile.
The Jigging Rap 05 has a single reversed hooks with a center treble and eyelet. This bait can also be bottom bounced, or yo-yo style bounced off the bottom with deadly results.
YONGZHI Ice Fishing Jigs
YONGZHI Ice Fishing Jigs may strike you as “Red Flagish”, (cheap yes, but do not let the price fool you) but these things will stupidly catch walleyes on Mille Lacs. The walleyes like something about them. It may be the movement, texture of the body, but I feel it’s the little red dab on the treble that makes all the difference.
Fish, walleyes are certainly no exception, simply go crazy of the stupidest of stuff. A case in point, the red yarn fade of the mid to late eighties where everyone was trolling leech and crawler rigs with a small piece of red yard tied on above the hook or above the knot.
Rattlin’ Blade Spoon
Custom Color Rattlin’ Blade Spoon by Jason Mitchell is another spoon that has been out for a few years now, but only until recently has it seen momentum as a go-to Mille Lacs walleye spoon. It is a great spoon and designed by a guy who knows walleyes and what they want.
It has one of the loudest, if not the loudest, rattle out of any spoon we have recommended. It has its own style of jigging movement that I feel walleyes like at time instead of the darting back and forth style of typical jiggin spoons. Its movement has an almost dance-like cadence due to how the spoon joints during jigging. It stays in its own verticle column which is nice because sometimes walleyes do come back after a typical jigging spoon darts into their body, spooking them away.
VMC Tingler Spoon
The VMC Tingler Spoon is fastly becoming one of the hottest lures used on Mille Lacs ice for walleyes. All the boat shops recommend them, even when they are sold out of stock.
The VMC Tingler Spoon acts like a fan blade underwater, causing it to uniquely twist as it drops and this is what makes the walleyes go crazy for the Tingler. It acts just like a struggling minnow falling to the bottom. You can not beat that!

Best Mille Lacs Walleye Tactics and Gear
What’s working the best as of yesterday (it has been all ice season so far) is if you stationary fishing, such as in a Mille Lacs ice house rental or portable, is first you should focus on setting up and getting down your second-line or deadstick using a small sucker minnow or pikeminnow. This second line, the deadstick, acts as a decoy of sorts to bring feeding walleyes into the area.
Deadsticking while using an iFish Pro tip-up is recommended. There are a good number of anglers that haven’t transitioned to this method just yet, so they will be using a bobber. You can use a bobber for deadstick as long as your bobber’s weight/buoyancy ratio is set up correctly as so not to be pulling the bobber under if the minnow decided to become active. Clam Ice Buster Bobbers work great for this.

Medium 36″ St. Croix’s Avid Ice Jigging Ice Fishing Rod
For the choice of walleye ice fishing rod to use, you will want to choose something fast tip like a medium St. Croix’s Avid Ice Jigging 36″ ice fishing rod. Yes, this is a great jigging rod, but it works perfectly for this and can also be used other times when jigging for walleyes.
Tie on a Gamakatsu Octopus glow hook, then tip it with a small sucker/pikeminnow. For the best presentation, most action, and longevity of the minnow life expectancy, we recommend hooking the minnow on its side, just behind the first (main) dorsal fin, piercing the minnow with the hook just under its skin roughly midway down its side. Thread the hook’s tip upward, exiting the tip back out through the skin, making sure the hook’s tip and barb are fully exposed. Hooking the minnow too shallow or softly can cause the minnow’s swimming action to tear the hook right out. Hooking the minnow too deeply will impact its swimming and diminish its life expectancy.
To complete this Mille Lacs walleye ice fishing presentation, lower the minnow down the hole and set your bobber, so the minnow is up from the bottom about 3′ tp 4′. Setting the minnow too low will make its actions harder for walleyes to pick up and could even allow the minnow to swim to cover. Setting up your bobber with the minnow too high will take it out of walleye radar range.
Mille Lacs Lake Northern Pike Bite
Multiple northern pike over the 40″ range have been caught the past few days, with countless smaller fish being reported. For those who would like to target northern pike, the southern bays have been producing. The eastside bays from Isle up to Sunset have seen the most reports with anglers landing northern pike. Additionally, inside Twins bay and just out in front of it has also been produced good size and numbers of pike.
The most straight for approach when targeting northern pike on Mille Lacs is to target areas of 5′ to 10′ of water. Then drill ice holes until you see green vegetation down the hole or on your camera. Using large to decoy sized sucker minnows, your rigging of choice, then lower it under the ice 2′ to 3′. The ideal time of day to target Mille Lacs northern pike is between 10 am and 3 pm.
Mille Lacs Lake Ice Roads Update
Now, we will review the Mille lacs ice reports. They are broken down by region, then by the resort. The colder temps of last week and overnight during this week have helped finally lock up Mille Lacs up, but the ice is far from stable. Please be sure to check with your resort before driving out for the first time and before you drive the following weekend.
The Ice Saga of 20/21 is playing out and things can change overnight or in an afternoon. Checking with your resort is the best way to know where you should and should not be traveling. Have fun but remain safe during your Mille Lacs ice fishing trip.

Region Specific Mille Lacs Ice Roads Update
Eastside of Mille Lacs Lake Ice Road Thickness and Fishing Reports
Agate Bay Mille Lac Resort
12″ to 13″ of Ice On Average, with the thinnest being 9″
One mile road still has about nine inches of snow mixed with it that need clearing. We had five tracks on it today, and we still have some work left for tomorrow. The resort team has marked out around Moon Reef Road, and it’s all laid out as to how it will go. Checking ice at Lake St., heading northwest, the second hole drilled only had 9.5″ of ice, so Lake SSt. will not be finished until tomorrow as we allow the ice to thicken overnight.
By Friday, we will get to Archer St., where there is not much snow, and the ice is good, with an average of 12″ to 15″ all along the road. We have pre-plowed driveways all along Archer St. on both sides. Customers can choose any driveway they like if it is open. Once you have selected a driveway, we ask you to stay in that drive to secure it. Once the driveways currently plowed have houses in them, no more houses will be pulled out to Archers Ave. for the time being.
Starting Friday, we will begin pulling out houses to Archers Ave. Those who have a winter package and a house 10′ x 16′ or less or 8′ x 18′ or less. The only catch is the road out is only open to ATV/UTV and snowmobiles as no cars or trucks are allowed on our ice roads this weekend. If your winter package is for a single axle wheelhouse, you can pull it out to Archers ave. But only with an ATV or snowmobile as all roads are closed to cars or trucks this weekend.
We ask our customers accessing Mille Lacs Lake on our winter ice road to stop in and check-in with our staff, and please do the same when leaving. Due to unpredictable ice conditions this year, we want to know who is out on the ice and who is not. This weekend, we are putting three to four smaller to standard, midsize rentals on Archers Ave. on Agate Bay Reef’s north side. This area is known for walleyes. Renters must have ATVs or snowmobiles to get back and forth from the house. Please call us at 320-684-2233. We have a weekend special from noon Friday till noon Sunday.
UPDATE JANUARY 7, 2021
Not much new today. We finished Lake St. and plowed a lot of driveways to the east side. We were careful and stayed away from where we found the 9.5” yesterday. We will finish them tomorrow.
Our post yesterday still holds as far as our plans for this weekend. Our resort is open for ATV’s and snowmobiles. No daily wheelhouse.
There are 34 spots on Archers Ave available first come first served. When they are gone, they are gone. Skid houses 10×16 or less and 8×18 or less with a winter package can be pulled out to Archers if you have a wheeler or snowmobile to get back and forth. Sheds count as to the length.
You can pull out Single axle wheelhouses with a winter package with an ATV. No cars or trucks allowed. Again you need an ATV or snowmobile to get back and forth. We will be open for food for takeout. Full menu for breakfast and Heggies pizzas for lunch and dinner.

Nitti’s Hunter Point Resort Mille Lacs Lake ice road only allows access to four-wheelers, snowmobiles, and UTV side by sides only. However, this may change by the weekend, and if it does, this message will be updated.
Hunter’s Point ice road extends out to the mudflats now and allows access to No Name, The Boot, and Blue Jug. By the time you read this, Hunters Point Resort should be staked out to Silver and Nine-mile flat. There is a sizable ice heave the resort team is working through as of right now.

Castaways Resort
10″ to 12″ of Ice On Average, with the thinnest being 6″
We’ve finally been able to get the lake trucks on the ice moving snow off the main road out to 1.5 miles. With the warm weather this week we’re still finding 10-12” from shore to 1.5 miles. At that point we found 7” on the cracks and from 1.5 to 3 mile there is anywhere from 6-12” of ice. The main road, 1.25 mile, & 1.5 miles, Wilderness, & 3 miles have been staked.
We will only be allowing wheelers, snowmobiles, & side by sides out this weekend. If you can pull your single axle wheelhouse with your wheeler or side by side then you can take it out as far as 1.5 miles and continue to access it that way. No vehicle traffic this weekend. Please continue to check the ice as it can still vary. Stop in the bar and get a pass and check out the map if needed.

The Rock Pile has 7″ to 8,” and the Little Bumps has a solid 11″ to 12″ of ice, and currently, they are allowing people to only walk out to these areas until the cracks start freezing over and they can bridge them.

***WEEKEND PLANS***
***WEEKEND UPDATE***
We are still allowing 1/2 ton trucks or smaller pulling single axle wheelhouses. We are also still allowing tandems being dollied by ATV or SxS. Our ice roads in the bay area around 16″, and we have around 13″ just off our roads.
We drilled hundreds of holes the past couple of days, and unfortunately, we found unsatisfactory ice surrounded by good ice late today in a few areas around Otto’s. Our number one goal is safety, and unfortunately, the ice isn’t quite where we need it to get people in wheelhouse out to Otto’s.
We can still get you a bit further out in the bay and into some deeper gravel. We will continue to monitor these areas of concern and will let you know as soon as we can get you out. We could use some cold weather…
Thanks for understanding.
It is imperative that everyone drives slow and stays within our boundaries. There is still questionable ice and slush pockets in certain areas. There is also deep snow that you can quickly get stuck in. We will have nicely plowed roads into lots of reasonable fishing grounds, and we ask that you don’t off-road and instead park close to our streets. With the warm weather, some of the banks are wet and sinking. It is essential that you drive on the stake side of our roads and not near the banks. Please don’t try crossing the banks (someone always does, and it is not safe).
We will also have a fishing contest, which is FREE with the purchase of a road pass!
We are looking forward to another fun and safe weekend on The Big Pond!
Brandt’s Ice Fishing Resort
13″ to 15″ of Ice On Average, with the thinnest being 13″
The update most have been waiting for! Starting tomorrow(Friday 1/8/21), we will allow 1/2 ton vehicles and less w/o towing anything. We have roads staked as far as Sloppy’s, including Center Bar, Jordon Hole, 1 1/4 reef, and the Point. We have no plans to plow any further at this time. Some slush pockets and some cones are marking off areas to stay away from. We have 13-15” on our roads. If you go off-road, avoid areas with large snowdrifts as these spots have less ice. Please take it to slow 15mph or less!
Private houses, call the office if you want to get pulled out, 10×20 and less. Only call if you plan to come up this weekend. We will allow tandem and single axle wheelhouses, but they will need to be towed by ATV or UTV. If time allows, we will consider pulling your wheelhouse for you if you have a season pass with us. There will be additional charges for this. Private houses do come first, so pack your patience.
We do have rental houses available today and for the weekend! Give us a call 320-532-3674
Hunter Winfield’s Resort

Ice Road Speed Limit is 10 MPH!
As of 01/04/2021, Hunter Windfield’s Resort allows up to 1/2 ton pickup trucks pulling single axle wheelhouses on their Mille Lacs Lake ice road. Their ice road is plowed out to just beyond Isle bay’s mouth and is setting up nicely. The new road extension has been temporarily blocked off to all vehicles. Wheelhouse access rates include $15 per day or $30 for overnight (two days). If the resort is not in the office, please call 320-676-1100.
Lyback’s Mille Lacs Resort and Ice House Rentals
11″ to 12″ of Ice On Average, with the thinnest being 11″
Today Lyback’s Resort reported 11″-12″ with 3″-6″ of snow on the ice and random drifts 12″. They advise staying away from snowy areas and drifts because of thin ice, so stay on the marked road.
As of 01/06/2021, Lyback’s will allow small cars, mini-SUVs, and similar vehicles out to rentals, privates, and portable fishing. They are not allowing 1/2 ton or larger vehicles to go out of their access. Single axle wheelhouses pulled with ATV are allowed. The team is starting to pull out the smaller seasonal shacks as of today. The larger seasonal shacks will have to wait for more ice, and the chance of that is not until next week.
Randy’s Rental of Mille Lacs Lake
12″ to 16″ of Ice On Average, with the thinnest being 10″
Randy’s is allowing 1/2 ton single-axle vehicles out as far as Indian Point. There have been some good reports and photos from Randy’s Rental as their guests are catching fish and having a great time.
Wilderness Warmth, Cove bay
13″ to 16″ of Ice On Average, with the thinnest being 10″
The resort team has marked and opened roads out to the channel. They did note reasonable amounts of snow in the bay, and where snow was found had 1″ to 2″ less ice than where snow was thin or nonexistent. The channel at the Mazominee point had ice thicknesses between 14″ to 12″ with spots with snow measuring as thin as 10″.
Overall, Wilderness Warmth reports the Cove bay area ice remains inconsistent and becomes more unstable as you get out on the main lake and advises anyone traveling on foot or vehicle on the main lake to use extreme caution.
