Mille Lacs Fishing Update and Report for 6-2-2014

The fish are still biting! If you can get them at the right time, walleyes will still bite. Rain & wind are hard to get, but you might get on a good bite if you can get in when the wind and rain subsides. You will. Large live rigs still have been good, but summer is getting here quicker than many may think. Seriously, it is here!
Start the transition to traditional Mille Lacs summer rigs. Leeches, crawlers & yes, lighted bobbers. The last week or so, the weather has been great, sunny and warm. The water temps have improved a lot. I saw temps from 51 to 64 degrees in a two-mile area of the lake!
Walleye
The daytime bite is in the sand, deeper rocks, transition areas, and improving with the progressing season. Lindy rigs raised off the bottom, targeting feeding fish with a leech, minnow, or crawler. Reports of some shallow walleyes coming while fishing smallmouth.
Spinners should take off soon as well as the temps warm up the water.
No consistent mud action has been reported, but not many activities in that area help confirm.
The evening bite has been steady—traditional presentations, 6 to 12 foot of water, in regular evening haunts.
Smallmouth
Fishing for smallmouth has been fantastic! People have a blast catching smallies during the day everywhere—huge numbers coming from water depths of 3 to 8 feet of water. Plastics, live bait, spinners, jigs, rocks, docks, weed lines, bays, and main lake areas have all been producing. Please take advantage of this bite while it lasts!
Panfish
The sunny and crappie bite is in full swing on area lakes. Fish 2 to 6 feet of water on the weedy shorelines. Using plastic or live bait under a bobber. Fish the northern bays where the bottom is dark and warmer. Right in the weeds… and sharpen your filet knife and enjoy!

Fish are starting to bite….the best time is in the evening around 8-10p.m. Out on the break. Orange and yellow hooks seem to be the ticket. 6-8 feet off the bottom has been producing the best fishing! Bobber fishing and leeches have done the trick!
