The Current State of Mille Lacs Lake Ice Thickness
The past week has seen little change to the ice thickness on Mille Lacs Lake. At most, some areas have seen an increase of about 1″, while due to snow cover, other regions have seen little to no change.
It is still highly advisable not to travel cross country yet on Mille Lacs with vehicles and vehicles with wheeled ice fishing houses in tow. Besides pressure ridges and under bridges, all lake areas are walkable and can accommodate ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles. Still, all ice anglers should utilize caution when accessing Mille Lacs Lake and check with local DNR or Mille Lacs resorts before going onto the ice. Using the many Mille Lacs public accesses is not advised at this given time as many reports of anglers getting stuck and having to be towed off the lake continue to come in.
Mille Lacs Ice Is Still Moving
Significant ice movement is still going on in almost all areas across the lake. The most ice movement has been from the southwest area along the west side and across the northern regions of Mille Lacs. However, ice heaves and bridges can be found all over Mille Lacs right now. Be sure to call your Mille Lacs Lake Resort before heading up to get the latest ice update.

Roach’s Guide Service Mille Lacs Ice Report
Mille Lacs ice fishing guide Tony Roach goes over a Mille Lacs Lake Ice Report for January 20th, 2021.
Tony still advises anglers not to go “Baha-ing” off of the resort ice roads because of the snow depths.
Roach’s Guide Service also noted that they are seeing an average of 14″ to 16″ inches of ice on Mille Lacs Lake currently, but has found some spots at 11″ to 12″ inch thick range. Roach advises everyone to be safe and to stay on the resort’s stacked paths. Roach’s Guide Service is keeping their ice houses in areas with safe ice and taking their client’s mobile and targeting walleyes and perch remotely with portable fish houses.
